What is the Green Energy Campaign?

The aim of the campaign is to build a mass movement of people to demand strong action from the Irish government to develop renewable energy sources and other conservation measures in Ireland and reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels. This would not only help tackle climate change, protect the environment and reduce our vulnerability to energy shocks, but would also help lift us out of the current recession by creating tens of thousands of jobs and would help develop new “green-tech” industries that would position Ireland as a world leader in Green Energy. What specifically are we campaigning for? The campaign is demanding a “Green New Deal” which is a major program of investment in renewable energy infrastructure and environmental conservation aimed at creating “green collar jobs” for people who need work. To find out more about the Green New Deal, read this Irish Times article: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/opinion/2009/1001/1224255612654.html This campaign aims to involve students and others all over the country. The first step is a mass petition-drive calling for a Green New Deal. Please sign the online petition here (link), and look out for the campaign when it comes to your campus or area.
